1264 – Athos article in Dutch in newspaper NRC (and a “travel alert”)

To our Dutch readers: buy todays NRC newspaper  to read this article by Lex Veldhoen, who visited Athos this spring. As you can read later in this blog, the discussion (or confusion) about how many days your Diamoniterion permits you to stay on the Holy Mountain, three of four days, goes on. We always thought that you have three nigths on Athos and that you had go back the fourth day. In Karyes we have been told that the permission is granted for four nights!

Another thing: if you want to leave for Athos at 9.45 h. here a warning: the big boat Panteleimon is out of order and the traffic is devided between small boats. You have make resevation for these small boats, otherwise you be left standing on the quay of Dafni, as we experienced op October 3th (for more information about this “travel alert” look here). If you want to avoid this trouble, take the large Agia Anna boat at 6.30 from Ouranopolis and at 15.45 (mo to fr) from Dafni. Even better is: we (8 p.) took a privat taxi boat for € 150 from Dafni back to Ouranopolis, a little more expensive, but much quicker!

1254 – Greek Police Arrest Abbot Efraim of Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos

The Greek procurator’s office accused Father Efraim of striking a number of deals in exchanging several cheap plots of land belonging to Vatopedi for expensive property in Athens. Investigators believe that these deals caused the loss of at least 100 million Euros to the government. Fr Efraim himself declared his innocence and rejected the charges against him. He’ll stay under arrest until the end of the court proceedings. Because of of his heath condition the abbot will be taken to a prison hospital in Thessaloniki.

This brings me to something else: I have been waiting for almost 4 months for our old weblog to return, but unfortunately the pictures are still missing. As you can see, at least all posts are back on athos.weblog.nl and the texts did return in the meanwhile, so I have hope the pictures will follow one day, That is why I decided the start publishing again on athos.weblog.nl from the 1st of January 2012. Hope to see back on our old adress.

1191 – a grim discovery

In BLOG 1176 I told about the dangers of walking the paths of Mount Athos on your own.

Athos brook

Reinhold Zwerger discribes in his book “Wege am Athos” that at least two pigrims died on their trip through the dence forrests and high clifs. Today another victum is added to the list, as we learn from Greek internet sites:

Wednesday, the 16th February 2011 the police in Halkidiki made a grim discovery. Human bones found in the riverbed in a forest area of the Sografou Monastery. From personal items and documents found with the bones , the police learned that the remains were from an old Hungarian, His traces have been gone since October 29th 2008 and he has since been sought.
The “findings” were transferred to the Forensic Service of Thessaloniki.

1169 – “Mount Athos Is On Fire!”

Afbeelding 12

Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol relates below an extraordinary experience of an Athonite elder he knew personally:
"One day after vespers were over the elder went to his cell to continue praying on his own. While doing that, he marvelled at the thought that everybody – all two thousand or so monks of the entire Athonite peninsula – was praying during that very moment. Then, he wondered what the Holy Mountain looked like under such intense prayer.
At that very moment he experienced himself being catapulted by the Holy Spirit high up in the air. It was as if he were looking down from an aeroplane. From that high point, he saw the Athonite peninsula spurting out flames like an active volcano, as if the entire mountain was on fire. Some of the flames went straight up to heaven. Others seemed weak, like the flame of a small candle, while yet others were flickering and barely visible. Yet, there was one, this elder claimed, that was like a fiery river that went straight up. He then overheard a voice coming from heaven saying:
'What you have witnessed is the Holy Mountain and these are the prayers of the monks that go up to God.'
Then the elder asked: 'And whose prayer is this great river of fire?'
God replied that it was the prayer of a certain abbot of a certain monastery, whose name cannot be revealed since this abbot is still alive."

1165 – Athos iPhone App

At November 16th 2010 the first Athos application for the iPhone was launched. It is for sale for € 1,59 and offcourse I tried it .

IMG_6858
The App is developed by GuidePhone.com/Amfinomi.

My first disappointment: on the Dutch App Store it says that the app is in English, but the app is only in Greek. Although the app gives you a relatively complete idea of all the important places and buildings on the Holy Mountain, the quality of the information is very poor! There is no detailed information, exept for some general historical background. Practical information about a visit and the pilgrimage is completely missing. The (aerial) pictures old and not made by a professional (even I can do better).

IMG_6863

The (old) aerial picture of Koutloumousiou and the only English text on this app: "FOR MORE INFO PRESS i".

IMG_6867
Newly developped apps usually give you photos in HD quality (look at the free Nasa App!), but not this one! In a very low resolution pictures are unsharp and not suited for a high quality iPhone display. Don't even think of looking at these photos on an iPad display, it is a disaster!

The publisher might have taken his change to provide the buyer of this app with a good map of Athos, so it could make a hike on the Holy Mountain a bit easier, having a map in your phone. Look here at (a part of) the result: it is terrible, the worst map of Athos I have ever seen! Only two roads are drawn and they even lead the wrong way!

My advise: do NOT buy this app. I shall be waiting for the FREE update (Athos 2.0): there is a lot of work to be done!

1163 – The smart person accepts, the idiot insists

(also see 1112) Michael Lewis, a financial journalist, published last October in Vanity Fair an article about the Greek financial crisis. New York columnist David Brooks choose this article as the best essay of 2010 (The Sidney Award). It is called: beware of Greeks Bearing Bonds

In the words of Brooks: “His specific subject is Greece, a country that plundered its public institutions while spoiling and atomizing itself. Lewis’s genius was to show how the moral breakdown spread into one of the most remote institutions on earth, a 1,000-year-old monastery cut off by water, culture and theology that, nonetheless, managed to put itself at the center of the great plundering.”

Father Arsenion of Vatopaidi

Father Arsenios, Photograph by Jonas Fredwall Karlsson

Lewis visits Vatopedi and informs us about his meetings with Father Arsenios and Father Ephraim, the abbot of Vatopedi. He quotes Father Arsenios:“There is more of a spiritual thirst today,” he says when I ask him why his monastery has attracted so many important business and political people. “Twenty or 30 years ago they taught that science will solve all problems. There are so many material things and they are not satisfying. People have gotten tired of material pleasures. Of material things. And they realize they cannot really find success in these things.”

Father Arsenios points to his slogan he has tacked up on one of his cabinets: the smart person accepts, the idiot insists.

The article gives lot of information about the background of the Vatopedi land scandal. Read the article here.

1159 – Vatopedi Verdicts

"Two senior monks from the Vatopedi Monastery, which has been implicated in an allegedly corrupt land-swap deal with the state, were yesterday (21th of december 2010) given 10-month suspended jail sentences by an appeals court in Thrace for being moral accomplices to a breach of duty. Ephraim, the monastery’s former chief monk, and Arsenios, its ex-financial manager, were accused of colluding with Maria Psalti, the former judge of a first instance court in Rhodope, northern Greece, where tracts of land involved in the swap are located. Psalti also received a 10-month suspended sentence for delaying making public a ruling on the ownership of the land" (from: ekathimerini.com).

1154 – Athos monk found with a 2.5 million euro bank account

Found on Greekreporter:

A 45-year-old monk from Mount Athos was found with a bank account of 2,5 million euros.
The Money Laundering Committee detected the bank account.  The Committee sent the file to an economic crime prosecution unit to find out if there has been any defalcation of worshipers money. The monk claimed that the money has been concentrated by worshipers for the construction of a monastery in Hemathia, Macedonia. The papers of the case have been given to the Attorney General of the town of Veria.

1120 – “Naval adventure on Mount Athos”

Boat Sofia
Today this "important" news item was published on the internet:

Monday, October 4, 2010, 01:12

Mechanical damage in the left main engine occured yesterday to the ship "Sofia". On board were 21 passengers, who performed the scheduled itinerary from Ouranoupoli to various ports of Mount Athos.

The vessel arrived at the port of Konstamonitou and landed the passengers safely, in order to continue their destination on the ship "St. Panteleimon" from the same company.

1112 – Vatopediou and the Greek financial crisis: an article in Vanity Fair

The Vanity Fair of October 1st publishes this article by Michael Lewis: Beware of Greeks Bearing Bonds.

In this long but very interesting article you read about Greek financial crisis and the role of Vatopediou. The writer visited the monastery and had a long conversation with the financial man of the monastery, Father Arsenios.

Here a part of his article:

That changed on October 4 of last year, when the Greek government turned over. A scandal felled the last government and sent Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis packing, which perhaps is not surprising. What’s surprising was the nature of the scandal. In late 2008, news broke that Vatopaidi had somehow acquired a fairly worthless lake and swapped it for far more valuable government-owned land. How the monks did this was unclear—paid some enormous bribe to some government official, it was assumed. No bribe could be found, however. It didn’t matter: the furor that followed drove Greek politics for the next year. The Vatopaidi scandal registered in Greek public opinion like nothing in memory. “We’ve never seen a movement in the polls like we saw after the scandal broke,” the editor of one of Greece’s leading newspapers told me. “Without Vatopaidi, Karamanlis is still the prime minister, and everything is still going on as it was before.” Dimitri Contominas, the billionaire creator of a Greek life-insurance company and, as it happens, owner of the TV station that broke the Vatopaidi scandal, put it to me more bluntly: “The Vatopaidi monks brought George Papandreou to power.”

Vatopediou Father Arsenios
Father Arsenios the CFO of Vatopediou

Here an example how buseness was done:

For instance, after a famous Spanish singer visited and took an interest in Vatopaidi, he parlayed the interest into an audience with government officials from Spain. They were told a horrible injustice had occurred: in the 14th century a band of Catalan mercenaries, upset with the Byzantine emperor, had sacked Vatopaidi and caused much damage. The monastery received $240,000 from the government officials.

It takes a while to read the whole article, but I think it is worth it, because it explains a lot about the current situation in Greece and the mentality of some Greeks (how NOT to pay taxes)!

1108 – Athos exhibition in Austria

There are only two days left to visit, because this exhition opened its doors on June 16th and closes already on September 9th: "Österreichische Künstler und der Berg Athos" (Austrian artists and Mount Athos).

Exhibition austria Berg Athos
In a castle, not far from Vienna, Herwig Zens, Heinz Nußbaumer, Sepp Brugger, Dimitri Manikas, Walter Mathis, Gerald Nitsche, Helmut Bichler show their works, and also from deceased artists like Paul Flora, Heinz Bohrer and Reinhold Zwerger.

Reinhold Zwerger is famous because of the excellent map he made of the Holy Mountain, which I used intensively during my hikes in the past years. In the near future I will pay some extra attention to the book he wrote "Wege am Athos", which I ordered today (a signed copy!), read more or order here.

1084 – Athos news

Two news items from our Greek fellow blogger (the Keliotes-site):

First of all: Father Epifanios from Mylopotamos decided to translate his famous cookbook into English and Russian.

IMG_5047 Father Epifanios

The English version will be published within a few days, the Russain will follow later on.

Cookbook Epifanios

Secondly: On thursday the 1st of July mr Joeri Louskof, the mayor of Moscow, and mr Mouratov, a member of the Russian gouvernment, decided in a meeting with an Athos delegation and the Patriarch of Moscow Cyril to renovate the Old Roussikon, the Palio Monastirion, that we visited last year (picture: see plan below the building on the right).

IMG_3180 Building F north

That is good news, because the buildings are in a deplorable state, although this church below is not in a bad condition(see plan below, the middle building).

IMG_3174 church 1883 north facade with stairs

On the other hand the news of a coming renovation gives me mixed feelings, because the old and deserted buildings on Athos also give a special sence of time and that all things are transient.

601 – Vatopedi statement

Wwlakevistonida2
All of the Monastery’s titles over Lake Vistonida have been firmly recognised by the Greek courts as property titles. The titles have been ratified in the chrysobouls of the Byzantine emperors Nikephoros Votaneiatis in 1080, Andronikos Palaiologos III in 1329, Ioannis Palaiologos in 1357 and by the Governor John Ougglesy in 1371. In due course the Ottoman invaders paid respect to the privileges of the Church and the Holy Monasteries.

545 – High speed wireless internet on Athos

Afbeelding_8
Send an email from the courtyard of Lavra?

ATHENS, Aug 20 (Reuters Life!) – Monks at six medieval monasteries have joined the 21st century with the installation of broadband Internet access on the remote Mount Athos peninsula.

The all-male Greek Orthodox monasteries were hooked up to a pilot wireless data transmission network, Greece’s main telephone company telecommunications firm OTE said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Through the use of innovative technology, we can provide modern internet services for this special religious and cultural centre,” OTE said. “The network provides for both broadband and IP telephony services.”

Thanks to Dimitris..
Someone on the internet reacted with ” there goes the neigbourhood“. It appears that the 6 large monasteries, the athonite school and the holy Epistasia have acces.
