1268 – Dutch TV broadcasting from November 3th 1960: an interview with Dr. Theunissen

The mountain of Silence

My fellow blogger Vasilis found this interview (in Dutch!) with the one the most famous Dutch Athos-’connaisseurs’, mister W.B. Theunissen. It is special that this interview from the early days of television survived and now is to be seen on EUscreen.

Dr Theunissen wrote three books in Dutch about Athos: (see our Book Title List nr 1207)

We payed attention to his books in 389, 390, 399, 408, 632.

1266 – Athos trip 2011 on You Tube

Athos – The movie part III 2011, with the following scenes: boat trip from Ouranopoli to Dafni with Arsanas Sografou, Docheiariou, Xenofontos and Panteleimonos, arriving in Dafni, Karyes, Iviron, Koutloumousiou, Karakalou, Kelli Timiou Stavrou (bells played by Father David), Lavra (Ossuarium) and Skiti Prodromou and back in Ouranopolis.

After climbing the mountain in a hike of 9 hours I was so tired that I forgot to shoot new videos. Brother Herman made this fine film of the top:

1242 – Athos documentary from 1999

In blog 1178 we showed you a DVD about Athos/Skiti Andreou from 2001.

This French film in four episodes, Mount Athos The Holy Mountain by Allain Bougrain Dubourg, is shot two years earlier, but is about the same monk from Skiti Andreou (in English and subtitled in Greek).

1217 – 60 minutes: a recent documentary by CBS

Air

Click here for the full documentary . A CBS crew visited the mountain and made footage of Simonos Petras and Vatopedi. They talked with many fathers some of American origin. There are some shots from the Vatopedi vault which can be opened with 3 keys and where they store a large collection of icons. A father who once was professor in Harvard talkes about the protection the Holy mountain got from Hitler during WW2. An interesting documentary.

The "60 Minutes" team was also stranded on Mt. Athos when heavy seas hit after the two-week shoot ended. Now back in New York, Karzis and Radliffe still seem moved by their time on the stunning mountain. If you're interested in visiting Mt. Athos as a pilgrim, these "60 Minutes" videos are arguably the best visual record ever created and the best place to start your research. If you're a woman, these videos may be the only way you'll ever see Mt. Athos. No women allowed.

1195 – film: Mount Athos, Monk’s Republic (Trailer)

Film mount athos 2010 1

Here (again) the French "controversial" documentary on DVD from 2010, published with subtitles in different languages, 52 minutes long, about life on the Holy Mountain in 2007. Made by director Eddy Vicken and writer Yvon Bertorello, with an estimated budget of € 400.000,00.

Trapeza Docheiariou

In the meanwhile I had the opportunity to see the documentary yesterday evening. According to me the only "controversial" thing about this documentary is the fact that it was shot without permission of the Iera Epistasía. The film showes an interesting view about life in monasteries (not only in Docheiariou, but also in Esfigmenou) and of Mount Athos' cultural and religious heritage, but it also shows its amazing nature and history.

The film gives a neutral account of life on Athos in 2007, were, if you like it or not, Esfigmenou is a part off. It is true that the abbot of Esfigmenou and the French monk get their chance to explain their point of view, but I did not get the feeling that the maker of the film was promoting their ideas, in fact an opposite reaction might occur: viewers might reject their extreme points of view about religious ideas and why they call themselves "Zelotes". As a Dutchman living in Amsterdam, where many different (religious) groups of people lived together for a long time (Protestants, Orthodox Christians, Katholics, Jews, Moslims, Hindoes, Boedists and humanists/non-believers), I always get a little nervous when groups of people start quarelling about their religious ideas. It reminds my of dark times in history and recent unpleasant events in this city …….

But anyway, officially you can take pictures on Mount Athos, but it is still forbidden to shoot films (= moving images), and I have seen that video-cameras were confiscated on the boat to Dafni. In meanwhile everybody knows that almost every photocamera or cell-phone has the possibility of shooting (HD)-films, so the compliance of the rule is nearly impossible. I would recommend to lift the ban on filming in this modern age, it would make things much easier.

"For the first time since it was founded by a Byzantine Emperor in 963 in northern Greece, this forbidden territory opens up to outsiders—and cameras—to reveal the complexities and beauty of a hidden society".

1141 – film: Athos: boat from Ierissos

Almost every visitor to the Holy Mountain starts the pilgrimage from the small town Ouranopolis, where your Diamoniterion (passport) is handed over.

This movie from Oktober 2009 showes the other way to enter the Garden of the Virgin: by boat from Ierissos. The boat leaves from Ierissos at 08:35, arriving at Lavra at 10:30. On your way back the boat departs from Lavra at 10:40, arriving in Ierissos at 13:00 (book for reservations: 23770-71149,21041).

In this movie you can see the monasteries Esfigmenou, Vatopediou, Pantocratoros, Stavronikita and Iviron. The maker of this film arrives at an unknown kellion (5:05), probably near Skiti Lakkou. The palm trees in the garden are specific, but also the (white) cats with their special tails attract attention.

The film is not of high quality, but showes Athos from a different angle, accompanied by relaxing music.

1083 – Karoulia – the desert – a short film

The desert skull you tube

A still of a cave, with the remnants of a deceased monk.

A Russian pilgrim visited Karoulia and he shot this amazing film of huts, caves and houses of hermits at "the Desert" of Mt. Athos, a place called Karoulia, a cliff right under the 2033 high mountain. The film is a little bit bumby, but it shows a small area of Athos, which is seldom seen before! Here it is:

1010 – two films from 1979 and 1980

Vasilis send us two links of films from 1979 and 1980. The first – short – film is from a service in the Protaton church in October 1979 (just a couple of months before my first visit to the Holy Mountain – July 1980).

The second film is an unique image, shot from a small airplane flying over the monasteries. It has the title Selection, pl. b (in Plagal, Second Mode) and there are subtitles in Greek and English with the texts of the Psalms.
Have a look at the Iviron monastery, where you stil see the wall in the southeast (scene 4), nowadays partly filled up with a new building. Scene 17, starting at 7.49, got me confused, because it lookes like a river flowing from a village, but it is in fact the (wet) road from Karyes to Skiti Andreou, that shines in sun!
